I remember hearing of classmates in 7th and 8th grade who had already had sex.I would much rather have my child's "innocence" ruined than their whole life ruined by HIV or pregnancy at that early age due to lack of proper sex education.Beyond that, it's just another religious "debate", with one side providing clear and cogent arguments, and the other side screaming nonsensical rhetoric.As for the parents who say they should be the ones to teach their children.. well you have roughly 5 years between 10 and 15 to teach them before the schools will do it for you!.
I don't know if this is sad but I've actually learned more real obscure history from Cracked in a more entertaining fashion than from any other history class or book EVER. We should put Cracked in charge of our nations' school textbooks and perhaps people could understand a Cracked perspective on calculus.!

Jman, I bet it depends on the area in DC. At the Garden Inn Hilton on 14th, I got hit up every night standing out in front having a smoke, or walking down to the mall to do the tourist thing. In Georgetown, I bet you don't get as much of that. As I thought about the list of cities I made above, it actually occurred to me that the one world city where I've never been hit up by a bum was London. I've seen one bum there, shoeless - as we crossed Westminster Bridge. But he didn't ask anyone for a thing.The ones in Barcelona were Dutch heroin addicts, and they were the most hostile and aggressive bums I've ever encountered. The point is, in the suburbs of Maryland, or Ohio, or Pennsylvania, you don't get this at ALL, to any degree.?

As a European that had a fair share of both systems of education, I'd fully agree. I did my undergrad in the States, went back to Europe for an MA, and then back to the States for PhD (for good reason!). I think one of the main issues in the United States is the lack of unconditional funding which universities receive. I know my uni (U of Illinois) is in serious problems with us graduate students (there is talk of a strike), because they aren't willing to pay teaching assistants the minimum wage. Currently, you can make more flipping burgers at McDonalds (which is an honorable job, just not as intellectually strenuous or important for the country as a whole) than you can teaching an undergraduate class. On average, we teach three to four sections of 25 students each per week. The average TA salary is around $14K per year - barely enough for rent, food, and a measly health insurance. No investment, no planning for the future, no luxury purchases like cable TV or travel. Getting an education, particularly when its difficult, is just not very financially appealing...Lab assistants and professors that have the opportunity hobnob with different corporations, of course, make a lot more money. That's fine, but it puts the university in a position where it has to respond very quickly to market forces, and doesn't have the option to redistribute donations - which would help maintain the balance. The problem is scientific research does not respond well to the demands for intellectual production - it usually takes time to be done right. When you have to do it fast to get funding, you don't really have the freedom to innovate, and you just wind up rehashing what other people are doing so you can get money.Voil'a, you have declining quality of education, and declining funding....Now back to the books (we read a lot :))...P.S. I fully expect a "Cool story, bro" comment after this.... :)
